"I was in charge of the album, to create the impression that the listener is sitting in the apartment Kurt in Olympia, Washington, somewhere in the late 80s and the witnesses of his work." That's Brett Morgen (Brett Morgen) - director, screenwriter and producer of the controversial documentary "Kurt Cobain: Bloody montage" - describes a provocative and disturbing companion album «Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings». In an exclusive Rolling Stone interview, he talks about the soundtrack, which is due diligence via Universal 20th of November.
"In many ways, recording unfolds as a concept album" - continues Morgen. "This is a journey of experience. We are committed to make it not just a musical experience - refers it to a collage solo demo, manic sound structures and fragmented sounding phrases 31-track deluxe edition of «The Home Recordings», many of which were recorded on tape during a guest of Kurt with an early girlfriend Tracy Marander. - All this celebration of creative attempts to Kurt. "
"I am a filmmaker - says Morgen. - This album was in charge of the director, so that it has some kind of cinematic quality. "
The album «The Home Recordings» will cover «And I Love Her» THE BEATLES, explosive ode northwest punk «Rehash», early demo NIRVANA «Sappy» and «Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle», as well as unexpected ode daughter «Letter to Frances» in the spirit of British folk music; eloquent reading «Aberdeen»; heartbreaking song «She Only Lies» (previously unreleased song Cobain); and the epic finale of «Do Re Mi» - a touching beautiful 11-minute ballad, which can be considered one of the last ever written songs Cobain.
«The Home Recordings», whether it be A luxury edition or the standard 13-track version was drafted based on the 108 tapes, containing more than 200 hours of audio to Morgen I found (and heard) in the archives of Cobain during the making of the film.
"All that I will refer to, due to the deluxe edition - insists Morgen at the beginning of the interview, expressing his preference for a more complete story. - None of the songs previously appeared on other albums or bootlegs NIRVANA ".
Really. The CD «The Home Recordings» there are no NIRVANA. In the same interview Morgen briefly considering rare recordings with bassist Krist Cobain Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, but eventually says, "The most interesting for me represented the material specifically Kurt."
In response to the question whether to accept the participation of Frances Bean Cobain and choice of material, the director explains that she and Universal left it on his conscience: "I went to work. The next word I heard was a statement. "
Morgen grateful for the confidence and freedom: "I must say that this is not just listen. But we ask students to sit these 73 minutes to master the road to hear the whole story. I think this project as a complement to the film, tells the full story, but in the form of a hearing. It has its own story, but if you've seen the movie, the experience gained will deepen your understanding of the album «Montage of Heck». And vice versa".
The album, as the film develops more in chronological order, starting with the demo «Been a Son» NIRVANA youth and early sound experiments to the final numbers «Do Re Mi», which is called the last song written by Kurt. But is Kurt put the date on the tape?
He did not set any dates. We were able to establish the chronology of the majority of the tracks - a year, sometimes a month - on the basis of other records that are present on the tape. I knew that all records where he just says different words, recorded in the apartment of Tracy. «Been a Son» also belongs to this period. But Kurt did not set dates. Therefore, it was so difficult to navigate in his diaries. He returned and supplement the record. Even his magazines were not necessarily in chronological order.
The first half of the album, in my opinion, is warmer and softer, Kurt seems to be more satisfied and contented. All this in an apartment Tracy. The turning point is the story of «Aberdeen». It becomes deeper context for everything that follows next. What begins as a lighthearted exercise assumes greater importance, filters the rest experience. "
In the film, he reads a prepared version of «Aberdeen».
He certainly acts. He wrote the story. It sets out in the usual manner material biased - corrected a few things have changed a few words. This history makes it a unique work of Kurt verbal. He did not take it too seriously. He spat the words, giving the snide remarks. History «Aberdeen» was recorded in multiple takes. As a result, you can hear how he edits text or turns the page. All of his cadence, texture voice is so unique about this story. I do not think that he had heard similar.
The album includes some unreleased songs, because Kurt never returned to «Burn the Rain» or «She Only Lies». You did not ask Krista Novoselic, he listened to these tracks? Why did the band did not play them?
I have not had a chance to talk with Kristen. Many of the songs, including the familiar fans NIRVANA «Frances Farmer ...» and «Been a Son», we heard in dozens of variations. For example, «Sappy» - Kurt had about 15 different versions. But most of the unreleased material on this album there is only one version. This means that there is only one version of «She Only Lies». It's interesting, because a lot of these songs are very specific.
Advanced medley «You Can not Change Me / Burn the Bridges / Something in the Way (Early Demo)» located in the sequence of the recording?
Track exist in this context. It blew my mind. Almost like a punk opera. I found it interesting that he was returning to the «Burn the Bridges» after «Something in the Way». There's another song, «Desire». Kurt worked on the song, and somehow he focused on the chorus «Desire». On the deluxe edition it sounds, two or three times. This is a floating theme decoration.
Wherever possible, we have tried to maintain a sequence of what was on the tapes. The transition from the «Aberdeen» to the [song] «Bright Smile» and [conversational piece] «Underground Celebritism» - all in line with the original tape that I dug. Often we leave the silence after the song as it was on tape to reproduce my experience listening to the original.
As auditory experience, the album can make people crazy. In the case enters the irrepressible imagination - Kurt signals everywhere.
We have 31 replica, and only a small part of them fall into their final form on albums NIRVANA. You have to remember - this is only the audio material, and it recreates and records visual images. This brings us back to what Crist said in the movie - Kurt was the creator. It flowed out of him. For me it is his joy in the first half of the album. He did not radiate darkness and nothing was not pursued. You see a young man in the room. No one tells him what song to write. He entertained themselves. I know that there will be critics and opponents of the project, as we are releasing unfinished work. But just as «Bootleg Series» promotes an understanding of the creative process of Bob Dylan, «Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings» contributes to the understanding of the process of Kurt. Moreover, the album offers a look at the other side. It's a creative outlet to which he did not always have access to playing as a trio. It is not any leftovers. It is a way to better understand one of the most significant artists of our time.
I must say that the first comparison that came to mind while listening to the soundtrack - the latest album THE BEATLES «Let It Be» with its voices and noises. This companion documentary eventually tells how creative the body is shattered.
I know what you mean. Something that can be attributed to the level of intimacy. You are good layers, peek behind the curtain. This creates sincerity, which generates forms of intimacy. There are moments where Kurt talking to himself: "Hmm, I broke a string." When you hear an interview with Kurt, it was not his voice. Here we have the interior of the Kurt - purity and harmony. Nirvana, if you want.
