M.1935B

A longer M.1935A with an obviously larger gun which appears to be a 75mm. Thisdesign uses a Hispano-Suiza 750hp Petrol engine and is probably just the M.1935Arebuilt into a longer form to carry that gun.

M.1936

Seemingly carrying over some the M.1935 ideas in a small light tank, with acasemate design. There are no photos known of it to me although it reportedlywas trialled with a dummy gun. Either mounting, or intending to mount, theChristie-Curtiss D-12 300hp Aero Engine. This one, for Christie, is unusuallydesigned to be driven on tracks only. The trials report of April 1936 mentionsan intended option of mounting an 37mm or 47mm gun.

M.1937

This is simply the above M.1936 rebuilt with a very ‘Day the World Stood Still’looking cupola covering the front. Offered at the time to the UK Government forthe fast cruiser programme the top is open so it could mount a turret or, usingthe cupola removed, as a barbet mounting like a tank destroyer. Fitted now withthe Curtiss-Wright 430hp aviation engine and at only 6 tons this is more of aracing car than a tank with armour stated to be 11/16ths of an inch thick.

M.1938 (T-12)

The Curtiss Wright engine is now said to be 450hp (20 hp more than the M.1937 version)this is a bigger and more spacious hull than the earlier M.1936 and M.1937models and although no images of it are available, it shows signs of being yetanother conversion of an earlier model. It used a lot of aluminium in thegearbox casing and internal components to keep the weight down.

Now here we sort of enter uncharted waters with Christie because of a totallack of reliable information. This vehicle resembles, and is probably basedupon, the T.12 design. It is said to have been a plan for a high speedairbourne tank destroyer using a 90mm gun. Going nowhere, this vehicle was latermodified as a tracked truck and then scrapped.

Looking decidedly like the M.1941 above fitted with a mocked up upper casemate,and the lower part obviously based on the M.1936, the M.1942A features no lessthan 6 machine guns (1 front , 1 rear, 2 each side); this is a seriously uglyvehicle albeit with some well angled plates.

Yes, M.1950 because again, the design is ahead of its time this project wasnever finished. No additional details are currently known.

Built under licence by the Midvale Steel and Ordnance Company of Philadelphia,4 examples were ordered December of 1917 and patented as a design in October of1918.

Using a 6 cylinder, rear mounted, 120hp engine this SPG could manage 8mph ontracks and a respectable 20mph wheels on the roads carrying the well regardingGPF 155mm gun. It was built from salvaged parts from the earlier M.1918 8”model yet it cost an unpleasantly expensive $67,500 in 1919 and was made from Bessemersheet steel riveted to a frame.

This model features and extended spacing between the roadwheels and an additionalchain drive linking the rear roadwheel and sprocket. It is possible that in theconfusion over naming that this is actually No.2 and not No.3 and vice versa.

Christie SPG Patent from December of 1920 for a two wheeled self-propelled gun.Visually it appears to be a forerunner of the 1924 trialled ‘ChristieSelf-Propelled Mount’.

This vehicle used a very low, flat, platform onto which a 3” AA gun (top left)and later (as shown) a 4.7” gun at a cost of a mere $83,000, the design failedas the platform was not strong enough to sufficiently withstand the recoil fromthe guns despite a special muzzle brake being used to try and alleviate theproblem. Also Patented by Christie in February 1920.
